Choosing the right lenses

Index numbers, coatings and options, translated into plain English.

We have an extensive range of lenses, and to make it easier to choose we have split them into packages: Value, Sports, Blue Block, Popular, Gold and Platinum. Below is an outline of the common lens thicknesses and how they relate to prescription strengths.

Every package includes the same coatingsAnti-scratch, anti-glare and UV protection come as standard on all of them. The package decides how thin and how tough your lens is, not how well it is finished.

Value — 1.56 index

Our 1.56 index lenses are thin and light — up to 15% thinner than standard 1.50 index — provide excellent optical quality, and are an ideal durable lens for everyday purposes. Recommended for prescriptions with sphere values from −4.00 to +4.00; for stronger prescriptions we recommend upgrading to a thinner lens. Not recommended for rimless frames, where the drilled mountings call for the impact resistance of polycarbonate — see the Sports package below.

Sports — polycarbonate 1.59 index

Highly impact resistant, and ideal for sports enthusiasts, active people and children's glasses. They block 100% of harmful UV rays. Recommended for sphere values from −4.00 to +4.00, and the lens we recommend for rimless frames.

Blue Block — blue light CR-39®

Blue light radiation from light sources and screens can be tiring on the eyes. Our blue light CR-39® lenses block harmful blue light and protect your eyes. Recommended for sphere values from −4.00 to +2.00.

Popular — super thin 1.61 index

Up to 20% lighter and thinner than standard 1.50 index lenses, recommended for those with moderate to high prescriptions who would like a lighter, thinner lens. Recommended for sphere values from −6.00 to +4.00; for stronger prescriptions we recommend upgrading again.

Gold — ultra thin 1.67 index aspheric

Up to 30% thinner than standard 1.50 index lenses, and ideal for those with high prescriptions. Recommended for sphere values above ±4.25.

Platinum — 1.74 index aspheric

The thinnest, lightest lenses on the optical market today, up to 35% thinner than standard 1.50 index lenses, and ideal for those with high prescriptions. Recommended for sphere values above ±4.25.

Why aspheric matters above +4.00For prescriptions stronger than +4.00 we recommend 1.67 or 1.74 lenses, because the aspheric design reduces the "owl eyes" magnification effect associated with thicker lenses.

Optional: super-hydrophobic waterproof coating

You can add an extra super-hydrophobic waterproof coating to any package. As well as repelling water it helps stop your lenses picking up greasy smudges, keeping them cleaner. Just select waterproof coating after you choose your lens package.
